Third Sector Representation

"The third sector makes a vital contribution to strong and cohesive communities and should be a key and respected partner of the local authority and other local public bodies and the private sector. The third sector is particularly important in ensuring that the voices of the most excluded people are heard."
Principles of representation: A framework for effective third sector participation in Local Strategic Partnerships. Department for Communities & Local Government, November 2007

The Government has made it clear that they expect the third sector to be able to get actively involved in helping to shape their local area. A key mechanism for achieving this is through the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP). Doncaster CVS facilitates Doncaster Community Empowerment Network (CEN), a network of local third sector organisations which provides representatives to Doncaster’s Local Strategic Partnership.

National Indicator 007: Environment for a Thriving Third Sector

A key area of work overseen by the Discover the Spirit partnership is delivery of Doncaster's Local Area Agreement (LAA), which identifies Doncaster's priorities for improvement.

One of these priorities is the need to support local third sector organisations by ensuring that there is an environment which enables them to thrive. Success in relation to this priority is assessed using National Indicator 007 (NI7) which measures the proportion of third sector organisations that feel local public sector bodies have a positive influence on their success.

Because creating an environment for a thriving third sector is a key priority in our LAA, Doncaster has a target for improving its NI7 result. The work being undertaken to achieve this is being overseen by the Stronger & Sustainable Doncaster Board.

To find out more about NI7, including the support work that has been undertaken by Doncaster CVS and members of the Community Empowerment Network, visit our webpage dedicated to NI7 in Doncaster. The webpage will also enable you to keep up to date with progress and actions taken by public sector agencies to support the third sector in Doncaster.
