Big ‘Thank You’ as Almost £2500 Raised for Flood Relief
30th August 2010
Local residents, charities and businesses have donated almost £2500 for victims of the Pakistan floods at a local fundraising event.
Organised by Doncaster CVS in conjunction with Islamic Relief and members of the local community, the event included a charity auction with items ranging from fire-eating lessons to a cricket bat signed by some of Pakistan’s international cricketers. A sponsored fast was also undertaken by non-muslim residents along with various other fundraising activities.
Speaking about the fundraising effort, Nazia Sattar of Doncaster CVS said:
“We would like to thank everyone who was involved in the fundraising event.”
“The event was attended by around 80 people, coming from a range of backgrounds and the money they have raised could feed 60 families of 6 for a month, or provide 16 families with vital emergency shelter.
“It was great to see so many people involved and a massive ‘thank you’ must go to all the local people and businesses that so generously donated their time, money and products.“
The United Nations now estimates that the floods have destroyed or badly damaged 1.2m homes and significantly affected over 17 million people. There are now also fears of major outbreaks of diseases such as cholera.
An area of more than 160,000 square kilometres – greater than the entire size of England – has now been ravaged by floods since exceptionally heavy monsoon rains began falling in Pakistan late in July.
