Fast Support for Pakistan Floods
17th August 2010
Doncaster CVS, in conjunction with Islamic Relief and Doncaster’s Muslim community, is organising a sponsored fast and charity event to support victims of the devastating floods in Pakistan.
The floods are estimated to have adversely affected over 1.2 million people and left some 1,400 dead, with over 720,000 homes destroyed according to the Pakistan Government.
Participants in the sponsored fast will be abstaining from food and drink from sunrise (4:50am) until sunset (8:14pm) on Wednesday 25th August to raise money for those affected.
Speaking about the fast, Nazia Sattar of Doncaster CVS said:
“Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, when Muslims fast in order to remind themselves how fortunate they are and to reconnect with what is important.”
“The devastating floods in Pakistan make this even more poignant and we are holding a sponsored fast to show our support for the people whose lives have been terribly affected by the floods. Money raised will be donated to Islamic Relief and contribute towards much needed food parcels and medical supplies.
“We will also be holding a charity event and auction, which will include a 3 course meal to break the fast. Everyone is welcome to attend, whether they are taking part in the fast or not, and entry is a donation of £3 more. Please do come along and support this important cause; any donations or other support would be greatly appreciated.”
The charity event and auction will take place on Wednesday 25th August from 6:30pm at the Stirling Centre, Milton Walk, Doncaster. There will be a guest speaker from Islamic Relief and a charity auction as well as a 3 course buffet of Asian food. Entrance is a minimum donation of £3 per person, for those not taking part in the sponsored fast.
We would also welcome any additional financial contributions or donation of items to the charity auction from local people or businesses. If you would like to book a ticket for the event or make a contribution to the fundraising effort, please email nsattar@doncastercvs.org.uk or call Nazia on telephone number 01302 343300 ext 208.
