Government Plans Major Overhaul to NHS
16th July 2010
The Government this week launched a new White Paper which will see a radical overhaul of the NHS and see the abolition of the Strategic Health Authorities (SHA) and Primary Care Trusts (PCT).
The White Paper ‘Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS’ and accompanying information is available on the Department of Health website.
Key elements of the proposals include:
- The transfer of local PCT health improvement work to councils
- Scrapping the current NHS outcomes framework
- Power and responsibility for commissioning services moves to GPs and their practice teams working in consortia.
- Establishment of an independent NHS Commissioning Board
- Plan to reduce NHS management costs by more than 45% over the next four years
- Local Involvement Networks (LINks) will become the local HealthWatch, to be funded by and accountable to local authorities
