Council to Consider Introducing Measures to Reduce Alcohol Related Anti-Social Behaviour

8th July 2010

The Mayor and his Cabinet are being asked to support the introduction of a Designated Public Place Order within the Conisbrough and Denaby Neighbourhood as part of a Partnership approach to tackling alcohol-related Anti-Social Behaviour effectively in the locality. The final decision will need to be taken by Full Council and is proposed to be discussed in early September.

A report, which will be considered at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 14th July states that:

The DPPO can be used to restrict anti-social public drinking, and gives Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers and others that are accredited through the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme, the power to confiscate alcohol.  Furthermore the Order can also enforce people who are behaving in an anti-social manner, to stop drinking.  It also provides powers to issue fixed penalty notices for failure to comply with a lawful instruction.

The introduction of a DPPO will:

  • Provide additional powers to police to deal with persistent drinking in public places and alcohol related anti-social behaviour.
  • Give a clear message that alcohol related anti-social behaviour is unacceptable.
  • Contribute to the range of actions, which are being undertaken to reduce violent crime in public places, and to reduce the fear of crime and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.
  • Work proactively with partners and the community to offer alcohol related education, support and environmental improvements in order to sustain positive changes.
  • Support the Council and Partnership’s key priority of the reducing Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour within the Borough.
